Kids nutrition - giving regular food a twist

Giving regular food a twist

Mommas dilemma .....how to keep the food healthy and interesting for their children. Kids throw a fit when they are served something they dislike.

You could always have an alternative for 'unhealthy' food, and create a healthier and nutrition-rich meal.

Try turning the boring roti and sabzi into a vegetable wrap with loads of salad leaves, tomatoes and onions for the crunchiness.

Cheese and butter are a child's weaknesses. So, how do we make it healthy? for children, any dish with a top-up of cheese is too good to resist. But, you could use paneer instead or if they just can't do without it, try the cheese made from cow's milk.

It's all about giving the regular food a twist, making it look interesting and giving your old recipes a new look. Just a few changes here and there, and you have a healthy version of fast food. So gear up all MOMS create something healthy n interesting.

Moms are the best cooks after all!

Are you tired all the time, you eat, eat, sleep and repeat, then read on

Are you tired all the time, you eat, eat, sleep and repeat, if yes then read on

Did you know that the human brain uses about 20 to 30% of a person's daily energy intake. That's why people who don't consume enough calories in their diet are more likely to experience lower motivation levels & mental alertness.

With the demands of today’s hectic lifestyles combined with too few hours of quality sleep and poor eating habits, it’s no wonder many people complain of fatigue and low energy. Nutritional deficiencies are also associated with fatigue.

Just  like the car needs the right type of fuel; don’t expect a standard car to run on diesel fuel. “Similarly  the body uses energy-yielding carbohydrates, protein, and fat in very specific ways, consuming each in proportion to the other is essential to ensure sufficient energy  to complete daily tasks, feel good, and to maintain an optimal state of health.”

Just as undereating can lead to fatigue, overeating puts the body in overdrive, channeling tremendous amounts of energy to digest and absorb the large amounts of food consumed.

How can a person feel refreshed after eating too much? It’s only natural to want to curl up and nap after a big meal; the resulting insulin overproduction can leave too little sugar available for immediate energy, resulting in lethargy.

Unfortunately, just as eating too much can lead to fatigue, fatigue can lead to eating too much, creating a vicious cycle of weight gain and decreased energy. Clients in this predicament must break the cycle by focusing on portion control, adequate sleep, and stress management.

EAT RIGHT TO FEEL BRIGHT !!!!!!!

Maha Shivratri and health benefits of bael leaves

Maha Shivratri and health benefits of bael leaves

Maha Shivratri, as the name suggests, is in the honour of Lord Shiva, the third lord of the Trinity (Bramha-- the creator, Vishnu--the preserver and Shiva - the destroyer).Shiva is always worshipped with bael leaves, and it is said that this tree is much loved by him. It is to be found in all Shiva temples throughout India.Lets have a look at its benefits on this occassion.

Bael, also known as the “Wood Apple”, is a species native to India. The bael tree is considered to be sacred to the Hindus. The Bilva tree grows in almost all parts of India, irrespective of the nature of the soil, and is bitter, astringent and dry by nature. Tall and austere, with a stern aspect, gnarled trunk and sharp thorns, the Bilva is undoubtedly Lord Shiva’s tree.

The English name for Bilva is Bael, also called ‘stone apple’ as its rather large fruit is like pale yellow suns when ripe. The Hindi appellation is Bel or Bael Sripal. In Sanskrit it is also called Bilva or Sriphal. The botanical name for this tree is Aegle Marmelops, and it belongs to the Rutaceae family. In the Atharva Veda it is described as being so sacred that its wood may not be burned for fuel.

Health Benefits:

-The consumption of Bilva leaves alleviates diseases caused by excess vata and kapha (mucus).
-They are also useful in diabetes mellitus. For this a few leaves should be chewed daily and their fresh juice drunk.
-They are diaphoretic (producing more perspiration), thus reducing temperature and lowering fevers, and an aphrodisiac.
-A decoction of leaves is a favourite remedy for ailments that often occur during seasonal changes, such as fever, flu and fatigue.
-According to Swami Sivananda, “The fresh juice of the leaves is given with the addition of black pepper in cases of jaundice, and when diluted with water or honey, this is highly praised remedy in catarrh and feverishness.”
-Bael is beneficial in the digestive system and it is also a mild laxative.Bael has a high tannin content which makes it an effective cure for dysentery and cholera.
-The fruit, roots and leaves have antibiotic activity.
-Bael root, leaves and bark are used in treating snakebite.
-An infusion from bael leaves is an effective remedy for peptic ulcer.

Our lifestyle

Our lifestyle
Today, many children and even adults spend a lot of time being inactive and simultaneously overeating. “An average child spends about 2-3 hours a day with television, the internet, mobile phones or video games during which they often snack on fast food and gulp down a lot of sugary soft drinks, all of which can add up huge calories.”

However it is not junk food alone that is making them obese—it is the junk lifestyle we provide them.

With this kind of lifestyle……eating junk, no activity, smoking, drinking…where are we heading…..

Hey guys please give this a thought………

Change your lifestyle now or never

If you know you need to change your lifestyle, don’t plan for 30 days down the line, or even tomorrow morning. Start Now. There is no such thing as a ‘last meal’, give up on the dieting mindset – this isn’t a diet, this is a lifestyle that needs to work with your routine and schedule to be sustainable.

You know your schedule and your tastes best, and only you know what is sustainable with your busy life. If they work in your schedule, make it a habit, if it doesn’t work or it isn’t to your taste, then it won’t be sustainable for you to keep forcing yourself to do it, so lose it!

Don't let DIET or EXERCISE grown on you, accept it as a lifestyle enjoy it.....When it comes to eating right and exercising, there is no "I'll start tomorrow.

Fats and Brain

Your brain is the fattest organ in the body and may consists of at least 60% fat (yep, you technically are a “fathead”).  But on a serious note, the reason I am pointing this out is because so many people don’t get enough healthy fats in their diet to support optimal brain functioning.

DHA (short for docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (short for eicosapentaenoic acid) are omega 3 fatty acids that promote thinking and memory.

Eat Dinner at least two hours before bedtime

Eat Dinner at least two hours before bedtime

It is generally advised to stop eating two hours before bedtime as our body’s metabolism dips and it is preparing for sleep(rest).

Furthermore, lying down to go to sleep after eating a late dinner or midnight snack makes it impossible for gravity to hold food and liquids in place so stomach acids can do their job.

Also lack of activity after dinner makes it difficult for the body to digest food, some researchers believe going to bed with a full stomach causes the food to turn to fat.

Regardless of which theory is correct, the bottom line is that eating before bed interferes with getting a good night's sleep.
So, however  healthy dinner you eat it does not serve its purpose.

Valentine's day special - Love and health

Love And Health

Research Examines Love’s Impact On Health.

On Valentine’s Day you need to consider this: There’s actually some real science behind those feelings of romance and affection.

Love actually can make us healthier, so much so that if you could bottle it, you would have an incredible wonder drug.

Scientists are beginning to discover that apart from food, exercise, stress, lifestyle, there is one facet of life that ranks above all in determining wellness and longevity. This facet is the level of love and connectedness that we feel.

If a growing body of research is to be believed, love can
-lengthen your life
-ward off stress
-boost your immune system
-lower your blood pressure
-protect you from colds and flu
-blunt your response to pain
-hasten wound healing and
-lower your risk of dementia in old age.

A study of nearly 1,400 people with heart disease found that those with a spouse or confidant died at approximately one-third the rate of those who had no one to confide in. Past research on love and health also presented by ABC News reported on a study showing that being with a spouse or partner is linked with a drop in blood pressure.

Well-respected author and medical doctor, Dean Ornish, makes a powerful claim for the value of love and intimacy: “I am not aware of any other factor in medicine – not diet, not smoking, not exercise, not stress, not genetics, not drugs, not surgery – that has a greater impact on our quality of life, incidence of illness, and premature death from all causes. Love and intimacy are at the root of what makes us sick and what makes us well, what causes sadness and what brings happiness, what makes us suffer, and what leads to healing.”

In summary, if you are interested in wellness and longevity, it appears fruitful to foster meaningful relationships that provide a sense of love and connectedness. As Dr. Ornish states succinctly, “Know that this really matters to your health.”

So there you have it, love is good for almost everything. The only exception: it doesn’t help you lose weight.

Do Good To All Before Dying
Spread Smiles Instead Of Crying
Love Everyone Well In Time
To Make Every Moment Valentine

Wishing you all a very happy Valentine day…Cheers

The Importance of Folic Acid during Pregnancy

The Importance of Folic Acid during Pregnancy

All nutrients are essential in preparing for pregnancy, but folate or folic acid merits special consideration.

Soon after conception, folate helps develop the baby’s neural tube, which becomes the spinal cord and brain. Women who consume enough folate, particularly in the weeks prior to conception and during the first six weeks of pregnancy, may reduce their babies’ risks of neural tube defects.

Eat a variety of foods rich in folate, such as citrus fruits and juices, dark-green leafy vegetables, beans and nuts. And women of childbearing age should consume 400 micrograms of folic acid (600 micrograms if pregnant) from fortified foods in grains, such as breads, cereals or pastas, vitamin supplements or both, in addition to the folate found naturally in other foods.

Move more to control weight gain during pregnancy

#PregnancyAwarenessWeek
Move More to Control Weight Gain During Pregnancy

If a woman gains too much weight during pregnancy, it increases her risk for complications such as preeclampsia (high blood pressure and excess protein in the urine) and for obesity after delivery, and also ups the baby’s risk for childhood obesity.

Along with helping control weight, regular physical activity can help reduce back pain, boost energy levels and reduce insomnia.
