Is being overweight or obese contagious? Are your friends making you fat?

Is being overweight or obese contagious? Are your friends making you fat?

Overweight and obesity can be considered “socially contagious” because the experts believe it’s a case of birds of a feather…. feel better together (even when they’re overweight or obese).

Right from childhood to golden years of our life, our friends define who we are and we choose who are friends are, and thus, ultimately we define ourselves.

Chances are you will eat & drink what your friends eat & drink! If your friends eat healthy, you will make better food choices.

If your nutrition habits are contagious, is exercise as well? Absolutely! If your friends are active, then some of those exercise vibes will enter into you too.

If everyone around you is unhealthy, & overweight, then it may be tougher, but not impossible. The best thing you can do is tell everyone that your goal is to get healthy and fit. True friends will want you to be healthy and happy and will support your health goals.

Be the best influence you can be, if you eat healthily and exercise, you will inspire others to do the same! Be their inspiration!

Rainny season and vegetable care

In rainny season wash all vegetables and fruits thoroughly

In rainny season wash all vegetables and fruits thoroughly, esp green leafy vegetables, cauliflower, broccoli, brinjal, roots and tubers which harbour larvae, worms and dust.

Clean them under running water. Steaming them is the best way to get rid of germs. Soaking the greens in salt water for about 10minutes can help remove insects.

Research has shown that using just plain old water can remove 98% of the bacteria when it is used to rinse and soak produce.

If you decide to use vinegar, research has shown that a 3 part water to 1 part vinegar is most effective. A soak of five to10 minutes should be sufficient. Try to get the water temperature as close to that of the fruit or vegetable that you wish to clean. When you have a variety of fruits and vegetables, it might be best to wash these separately.

International Yoga Day

The World Yoga Day, also known as the International Yoga Day, falls on June 21. The theme of this year is  "Yoga for Peace."

The main aim to celebrate this day is to create an awareness worldwide on the importance of staying fit and healthy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014 had suggested that June 21 be celebrated as the international Yoga Day globally every year. The word Yoga has been originated from Sanskrit word Yuja, which means ‘to join or unite’

The first International Yoga Day at Rajpath, had created two Guinness Book of World records. First with the participation of 35,985 people and second. as many as 84 nations participating in the event.

Yoga originated in ancient India around 5,000 years back. Yoga is an amalgam of physical, mental and spiritual practice which helps enhance one's physical as well as mental health along with the self-healing ability.

Yoga also aids in combating stress causing changes in the genes, a study carried out by the researchers from Psychology at Coventry University in the United Kingdom, with Ivana Buric as the lead researcher, pointed out.

Yoga is the journey of the self, through the self, to the self.

Don't take good health for granted

Don't take good health for granted

No one wants to be sick. But tell me very frankly when do we start to take notice and some action about our health, only after we fall sick or are in the process of losing our health. During this time, we make all sorts of promises and resolutions. But once we get it back, we often return to our old ways. Isn't this true??

Good health is one of those things that is usually taken for granted. Chronic, degenerative conditions usually takes years, even decades, to develop, nothing develops overnight.

For example, heart attack or a tumor in your body, do you think it developed overnight? No way. It took a long time to get to a size where it becomes visible. All your hardwork of abusing your body in the form of unhealthy lifestyle, stress, junk eating, toxic buildup, weakened immune system which had probably been around for years too showed it's effect. Do realize that, once a disease takes root, the decline usually starts gaining momentum.

Fresh dates

Fresh dates health benefits

Dates are a type of sweet fruit that grows on palm trees. Dates are a good source of energy. Around 100gm of fresh dates gives 133kcal.

Up to 80 percent of the date flesh is sugar that the body can easily access for energy. Fresh dates have sugar like fructose and dextrose that when eaten replenishes energy and revitalizes the body instantly; thus, for these qualities, dates are being used to breakfast during Ramadan months.

Fresh dates are a particularly good source of calcium, which helps promote strong teeth and bones.

Dates are rich in dietary fiber. Most of the fiber is of the insoluble type, promoting smooth functioning of intestinal tract. It also prevents dietary LDL cholesterol absorption in the gut.

They contain many health benefiting flavonoid polyphenolic antioxidants known as tannins. Tannins are known to have anti-infective, anti-inflammatory, and anti-hemorrhagic (prevent easy bleeding tendencies) properties.

Dates  are low in  fat, 100 g of dates, has only a fraction of a gram is fats.

Muslims generally break their fast by eating dates. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is reported to have said: “Break your fast by eating dates as it is purifying.”

So go ahead have a few dates everyday whether dried or fresh as u wish just enjoy the benefits............

World blood donor day 14th June 2018

World blood donor day 14th June 2018

A blood donor must be deemed healthy before donating blood.

There are many benefits to donating blood like anti cancer,  improved iron stores, the people who benefit most from blood donations are regular donors.

University of California researchers estimate that your body burns about 650 calories with every pint donated, as the body has to work to replenish itself.

You can only donate once every two months, because of the wear and tear your blood-producing systems undergo.

Donate blood,  save a life and improve your health too.

Sit less move more

SIT LESS MOVE MORE
Sitting is the new smoking.

Gavin Bradley, director of Active Working, an international group
Gives following suggestions -

Hold standing meetings,Walking meetings.
Walk over to a colleague’s desk instead of sending an e-mail.
Use the stairs instead of the elevator.
Take your calls standing.
Taking a lunch break.
Walk around.

Isn't this Simple stuff.

No matter how much you exercise, sitting for excessively long periods of time is a risk factor for early death, sitting too long can kill you, even if you exercise.

Have you started moving!!!

Sitting for long hours can affect you

Can sitting for long hours put you in trouble?

You may want to stand up while you read this.

Experts now say you should start standing up at work for at least two hours a day -- and work your way toward four.

Today, the average office worker sits for about 10 hours - office meeting, sending emails, eating meals,  mobile, computer etc.

Medical researchers have long warned that prolonged sitting is dangerous, associated with a

-significantly higher risk of heart disease
- diabetes
- obesity
- cancer
- depression
- muscle and joint problems especially muscles in your lower body are turned off.
- Metabolism slows down 90 percent after 30 minutes of sitting.
- Enzymes that help break down fat drop by 90%
- Good cholesterol drops by 20%

Just getting up for five minutes is going to get things going again.

So SIT LESS MOVE MORE

Connect with Nature

CONNECTING WITH NATURE

Go on a leg powered journey
The simplest way to get back into the way of life of our ancestors is to travel in a more traditional way. We didn’t evolve driving on a motorway or riding a train.

Slowing down, and walking to the top of a mountain, canoeing across a lake, riding a horse or being taken on a journey through wild country by a husky dog sled are all great ways to reconnect with nature.

Similarly walking barefoot on the grass or along the beach. Focus on the feeling of your feet connecting with the earth and the sense of feeling grounded that can come along with this.

Do try this. ...also comment below if you have any further ideas.

Three Rs that can save us

THE THREE R’S THAT CAN SAVE US

We’re probably throwing out more food/money than we realize. We all do…but few of us recognise this and fewer still admit to it! In fact each of us throws away on average 120kg of food a year. but what can you and I do about it?? Do I really waste food?

The following  three R’s can save us!!!

REDUCE – food wastage by buying more efficiently. Take a list with you to the grocery store; you’re less likely to buy items that you won’t use. Even better option is to plan your meals for a week which eases out shopping and cooking both.

REUSE- unwanted item where possible instead of disposing them
Donate any unopened non-perishable items that you definitely won’t use. Clean out your fridge/freezer/cupboards on a somewhat regular basis and use  anything that is getting near to the manufacturers “best by” date.

RECYCLE - compost
Use any leftover food, use your creativity. If at times you have brought a vegetable, it already started spoiling so can’t reuse it, you’re down to “recycle”, that’s where composting comes in, possibly some nice soil will magically appear.

Just THINK.EAT.SAVE: Reduce your foodprint!
Save Food, Save Environment and Save Lives………

So now you are aware about the 3R’s!

So Have fun #Reducing, #Reusing and #Recycling #Worldenvironmentday

Beat plastic pollution

World environment day 5th June 2018

With “Beat Plastic Pollution” as the theme for this year’s edition, the world is coming together to combat single-use plastic pollution.

Here are some super easy ways to get started.

Bring your own shopping bag made of cloth

Stop buying bottled water. ...use Stainless Steel or earthen ware bottles

Say no to disposable plastics, Replace disposable items with reusable like made of neem or edible alternatives.

Instead of plastic straw,  use one made from wheat or bamboo.

Look out for packaging when shopping, like buy Ketchup, mustard, oil, vinegar, and other products in glass jars and bottles.

Let's each one of us pledge "If you can’t reuse it, refuse it"

Share your ideas about bringing down the plastic pollution.
