Anti Obesity Day -26th Nov lets shape the destiny of India towards a healthy future

Anti Obesity Day -26th Nov
Lets shape the destiny of India towards a healthy future
The campaign against obesity is much needed and November 26th is dedicated as Anti-Obesity Day in India, to create awareness about obesity, its health risks and the best ways to manage weight.

Impact of obesity

Being obese or overweight brings significant risks at a range of different points throughout life. The health risks for adults are stark. We know that, compared with a healthy weight man, an obese man is:
  • five times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes
  • three times more likely to develop cancer of the colon
  • more than two and a half times more likely to develop high blood pressure – a major risk factor for stroke and heart disease

An obese woman, compared with a healthy weight woman, is:
  • almost 13 times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes
  • more than four times more likely to develop high blood pressure
  • more than three times more likely to have a heart attack

Tackle Obesity
The Indian diet is actually very nutritious but we fail to make use of its potential benefits.

Here are a few pointers which can be kept in mind:-

1. A balanced diet with adequate amounts of vegetables, proteins, and fruits is the key to eating right and managing weight. Do not Diet to lose weight but EAT RIGHT
2.Include more fiber in the diet and make sure to avoid junk food, snacks and bakery products.
3.Consume low fat dairy products, lean meat and nuts.
4.Do not skip meals
5.Eat small and frequent meals, follow  6 meal pattern a day.
6.Breakfast should include a bowl of cereal and processed foods should be replaced with whole grains and food which contains fiber.
7.The intake of sugar, salt, spices and oil should be limited as they are the root cause of many disorders
8.Low fat meals can also be made tasty, therefore effort should be put in that direction.
9. Regular exercise 4-5 times a week is an absolute must to prevent obesity.
10.Monitor weight regularly

By making these changes we will remain healthy and thus will contribute to the overall health of the nation.

Prevention of obesity should be directed to encourage a health centered, rather than weight-centered approach that focuses on the individual as a whole. The emphasis should be on a healthy and active lifestyle and creating a nurturing environment that helps them to recognise their own worth and respect cultural food ways.
On Anti-obesity day, let us endeavor to raise a food smart generation who will shape the destiny of India and take it towards a healthy future.

Low fat foods

Low fat foods

Festive season, festive mood is setting in , you will find a lot of food product over the shelf stating “LOW FAT”, but do you know…Low-fat food by no means suggests that the food won’t convert into fat in your body. To be honest, most fat-free or low-fat foods have only a marginally lower fat content than their full fat versions – and they convert into fat just like their full fat counterparts!

Check the sugar and calorie content of such products because they may contain less fat but lot of sugar making it calorie rich.( Eg Low fat Yogurts)

If a product is ‘No fat ,No sugar’,look for ingredients like honey, corn syrup, jaggery, peanut butter, etc as all these contribute to lots of calories.

LITE’ PRODUCTS- Many products advertise themselves as ‘ LITE’ or ‘LIGHT’. This does not necessarily mean that it is light in calories, fat or sugar. It might be light in Weight, less in content of any 1 nutrient like sodium, or just Light in Colour.

'CHOLESTEROL FREE ‘-Cholesterol and Fat are not the same thing. So when products are labelled cholesterol free this does not mean it is fat free.
For eg, Cooking oil may be cholesterol free but it is 100% fat.

Be a Smart Consumer!!!!!

How healthy is Idli Sambar???

How healthy is Idli Sambar???
How healthy is Idli Sambar???
Idli is the top food on the list for "eating healthy especially while eating out" also one of the safest food.

Idlis are made from a combination of rice and urad dal which is fermented and then steamed, thus has probiotic properties

Both these processes are very good
for the digestive system and involve cooking with no oil at all. However most restaurants use baking soda to speed up getting the idli batter ready and while too much baking soda does destroy nutrients and affects the digestive system in the long run. Similarly the ready made idli batter also contains some amount of soda.

Another important things is the combination of cereal n pulse improves the quality of protein i.e gives the best quality protein comparable to that of an egg which is considered excellent.

World Food Day - 16 October 2012

World Food Day - 16 October 2012

“Agricultural cooperatives – key to feeding the world”.

This is the theme for World food day 2012. The day is about recognising the worldwide problem of hunger, hence the theme has been chosen to highlight the role of co-operatives in their contribution to food security and ridding the world of hunger.

This years theme is also important as 2012 has also been designated “International Year of Cooperatives” by the UN General Assembly.

However, it is not just about donating food to the world's hungry and undernourished peoples. It is about doing something to help them help themselves. If I was hungry and someone gave me a plough to farm my land I would be far more grateful than if they gave me a sack of potatoes. If I had a plough I could be self-sufficient and produce my own food. That is what the day is trying to encourage.

The Food and Agriculture Organisation is a division of the United Nations, and is responsible for World Food Day. Along with raising awareness of hunger and poverty, the day aims to encourage economic and technological cooperation between different governments and with non-governmental organisations.

With an estimated 1.02 billion malnourished people across the globe it is a pretty serious matter and worth the public and private investment that is being sought out. So that's why it is important to raise awareness via World Food Day.

Feed the world, make it a better place

World arthritis day -October 12 2012

World arthritis day -October 12 2012

The 2011/2012 the theme is ‘Move to Improve’

World arthritis day is dedicated to aware the people relating to pains caused in knee, joints and other body parts. Arthritis is seen in every age groups-men women, children, and young people but mainly found in elderly people. Mostly the age group of 50-66 is affected with the problem of arthritis. This causes in pain, swellings, and stiffness in joints. Therefore a day has been dedicated in order to aware the people all over the world about arthritis. In this day person come across with problems related with arthritis, take the steps to tackle it.

A healthy eating plan can greatly reduce the painful symptoms of arthritis.
Eating a balanced, nutritious diet containing plenty of cereal foods, vegetables and fruits;low in fat and includes only moderate amounts of sugar, salt and alcohol helps support the body so it can heal itself naturally. While some arthritic conditions may not be reversed, many sufferers can reduce their pain considerably by following some simple dietary advice. A consultation with a nutritionist or a physician about holistic medicine for arthritis may yield additional diet or lifestyle advice to help you manage your condition.

Nutrition can help, either with medicines or, in some cases, instead of them. Foods affect the joints in two major ways. First, certain foods trigger the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, and eliminating these foods sometimes causes even long-standing symptoms to improve or even remit entirely. Second, certain fatty acids have an anti-inflammatory action that can reduce joint pain, stiffness, and swelling.

Your weight is the single most important link between diet and arthritis, as being overweight puts an additional burden on your hips, knees, ankles and feet. If you are unable to exercise as much because of your arthritis, you should reduce your calorie intake. This will prevent excess energy from the food you eat being stored in your body as fat.

However keeping active can minimise the ill effects of arthritis, so say the experts.

So stay active eat healthy n fight arthritis.
