world environment day

World environment day

The 2015 theme for World Environment Day is Sustainable consumption and production. The slogan for the theme is "Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care."
The well-being of humanity, the environment, and the functioning of the economy, ultimately depend upon the responsible management of the planet’s natural resources. Evidence is building that people are consuming far more natural resources than what the planet can sustainably provide.

Many of the Earth’s ecosystems are nearing critical tipping points of depletion or irreversible change, pushed by high population growth and economic development. By 2050, if current consumption and production patterns remain the same and with a rising population expected to reach 9.6 billion, we will need three planets to sustain our ways of living and consumption.

The WED theme this year is therefore "Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care."

Living within planetary boundaries is the most promising strategy for ensuring a healthy future. Human prosperity need not cost the earth. Living sustainably is about doing more and better with less. It is about knowing that rising rates of natural resource use and the environmental impacts that occur are not a necessary by-product of economic growth.

Maggi-under-regulatory-scanner-for-lead-MSG-beyond-permissible

Lets have a look as to what is this MSG and lead.

Monosodium glutamate is the sodium salt of glutamic acid, one of the most abundant amino acids in the diet that occurs naturally in protein-containing foods such as meat, vegetables, and dairy products.

MSG is a flavor enhancer traditionally used in Chinese food. MSG provides the benefit of umami (savory) taste, tricks your tongue into making you think a certain food is highly nutritious ,stimulates the pancreas to produce insulin and may be addictive. It is a kind of toxin that can cause diabetes, adrenal gland malfunction, seizures, high blood pressure, excessive weight gain, stroke and other health problems.

It could also be argued that if used in small amounts will not be a problem, but if small amounts are in several common foods that are consumed every day, the problem moves to a much graver scale.

Another culprit found  in Maggi- LEAD which interferes with a variety of body processes and is toxic to many organs and tissues including the heart, bones, intestines, kidneys, and reproductive and nervous systems. It interferes with the development of the nervous system and is therefore particularly toxic to children, causing potentially permanent learning and behavior disorders. Symptoms include abdominal pain, confusion, headache, anemia, irritability,

“As humans, we like to have an explanation for things, and especially for the things we love to eat RIGHT ...the choice is all your a 2min meal may lead to a lifetime of illness.

World No Tobacco Day 31st may

World No Tobacco Day 31st may

"Stop illicit trade of tobacco products " is this year's theme

The illicit cigarette trade is defined as “the production, import, export, purchase, sale, or possession of tobacco goods which fail to comply with legislation”

Illicit trade takes tax revenue away from the Government, which could have otherwise been spent on the provision of public services, instead directing such funds into the hands of criminals. Illicit trade strengthens corruption and weakens good governance.

The global tobacco epidemic kills nearly 6 million people each year, of which more than 600 000 are non-smokers dying from breathing second-hand smoke.

What’s the greatest threat to a smoker’s health?

Lung cancer is a good guess, and a wrong answer. Cigarettes cause 124,000 lung-cancer deaths  each year, but do you know they kill even more people (138,000) via heart disease. Smokers suffer heart attacks at twice the rate of nonsmokers—and they’re less likely to survive them.

Fortunately, these effects are reversible. Quit smoking, and your risk of a heart attack drops almost immediately, returning to that of a never-smoker within five to 15 years.

Cigarettes contain over 4,000 toxic chemicals, 50 of which are known to cause cancer and nicotine is one of them. WHO estimates passive smoking causes 600,000 deaths every year.

Tobacco kills nearly 6 million people each year, of which more than 600 000 are non-smokers dying from breathing second-hand smoke.One-third of those killed are children who are often exposed to smoke at home, according to the WHO.
