My views on "Why 2 bowls of cornflakes does not work permanently" in tanya munshi's lifestyle portal

My views on "Why 2 bowls of cornflakes does not work permanently" in tanya munshi's lifestyle portal

We were intrigued with a popular cornflakes telly advert that promised of a jaw-dropping waistline matching that of a gorgeous Bollywood diva.

But alas, working mothers like us and even busier home makers can find it a challenging option to just survive on two bowls of cereals to look glam (and may we add slim and fit?)

With a busy schedule where we are seldom left with ‘me time’, where taking care of a basic beauty, hair or a health regimen takes a back seat, it made us wonder whether a ‘two bowl cornflake challenge’ can actually make us ‘feel special’!

So the best thing to do here was to check with Mumbai based Nutritionist Shilpa Mittal who sheds some light on the same. Read on…

Keep it for a busy day
Although it is easy or convenient to follow such a diet, whether you’re a housewife or a working woman, having cereals for breakfast and dinner should be used as a handy option only for those busy days and not otherwise!

Plus and Minus of it
Though on the plus side, a breakfast or dinner consisting of cereals does provide a low calorie dietary option, however, it is low in terms of dietary fiber content and protein.

Another plus point - the entire meal gives us about 5.4gm of protein that is majorly contributed by milk, although quite low in terms of fat percent. But do think about your fiber and protein intake too which are equally important for you.

Isn’t it boring?
It does not offer much variety, eating two meals of cereal and milk can be quite monotonous. So it is difficult to be followed for longer periods due to boredom.

Is it all natural?
Most of the vitamins and minerals present are artificially added and not naturally present in it.So ideally it’s always best to go for a home made breakfast or snack.

Is it balanced?
The diet that you follow to meet the ‘2 week weight loss challenge’ is not balanced as it lacks fiber, protein, essential amino acids and fatty acids.

In reality…
There is no single food that can help you lose weight. For instance, moongdaalis rich in protein, khakhrais rich in carbs and cornflakes are rich in complex carbs. Variety is the spice of life, so eat variety as God has created.

Will it work?
It may defiantly work but it is not a realistic plan to be continued for lifetime. For permanent weight loss the diet should be as close to your normal/ regular diet as possible, only then will you be able to stick to it for lifetime.

Yummy ways to effective weight loss
Weight loss is effective only with a disciplined diet and exercise routine.Instead of the boring or monotonous ‘2 bowls of cereal challenge’, you can try the following exciting and tasty options:-
1.      Upmas with lots of veges

with plenty of veggies

2.      Parathas with veges and panir
3.      Sandwiches- with veggies, egg, chicken, baked beans
4.      Pancakes or Quesadillas
5.      Khicdhi, pulao, briyani
6.      Roti wraps, Frankie
7.      Oats with milk or with veggies
8.      Whole wheat pasta with veggies and paneer (cottage cheese)
9.      Omelets
10.  Fried rice (if the rice is already cooked)

Healthy kitchen tips for weight loss
However, please note that each dinner option item should provide complex carbohydrates (oats, cornflakes, bread or chapatti), proteins (milk, egg, chicken, dals, beans, pulses or curd), fats (in form of nuts, or oil), vitamins and minerals (from fruits or vegetables).

Bulk up on certain foods like cooked rice, cottage cheese, chicken, mushrooms, some boiled beans like soya beans, moong, kidney beansand chickpeas in your refrigerator and add them generously to salads, stir-fries and rice.

Always stock, any one green chutney (mint or coriander), onion chutney, tamarind chutney & tomato chutney in the fridge. This will be handy as a side dish or doubles up as a sandwich spread also

A lit bit of planning and discipline will help you eat healthy and also lose some weight.

Three-bite rule

Three-bite rule

When you crave something like cake or chocolate, follow three bite rule, and here it is
Take a small spoon and eat this in three bites and not just gobble it up.
The first bite – enjoy it with all your senses and linger over it.
The second bite, enjoy the flavor.
The third bite, satisfaction.
Then go wash the spoon and put it away.
Your waistline just thanked you!

I know you must be thinking so easy to write but believe me it works

"World Health Day 2014

World Health Day 7 April 2014

World Health Day world-wide is celebrated on 7th April to commemorate the founding of World Health Organization on this day in 1948.  Every year a theme is selected by WHO to highlight the area of public interest for that year. For 2014 the theme is ‘vector born diseases’.  The theme is apt in view of the fact that 40% of the world’s population is at risk from dengue & leptospirosis incidence rates rising globally – 600,000 pa 350-500 million cases of malaria reported each year.

'Small creatures can create big threat'.  The goal of the day is to raise awareness of Vectors, for example, bugs, ticks and mosquitoes. These small creatures can carry disease from human to human and from place to place.  The problem is they can really put our health at risk and we need to be aware of the problems they can cause both at home and when we are out and about travelling. It's very important that we know the diseases they can cause and how to protect ourselves

World Health Day is on April 7: 2014 Theme is vector Born Diseases

World Health Day is on April 7:  2014 Theme is vector Born Diseases
Nature’s gift i.e., good health needs to be up-kept. One needs to be healthy to achieve something in his life.  In majority of the cases, health can be maintained by our own efforts.
Beijing: Everybody known that ‘Health is wealth’. A living creature can become ill at any time, there are no fixed timings for illness – illness can attack in morning, afternoon, evening or night, it can attack new born, teens, youth, middle aged persons and the old alike. To increase awareness, World Health Day is celebrated on April 7 every year.
The only unplanned occurrence during ‘life’ time is illness.  Education is planned, so is the career, the marriage, the wealth accumulation, the retirement and everything except illness.  Illness can eat one’s life-time savings.
Despite full knowledge about the serious effects illness can cause, the people are not giving the required seriousness to maintain good health. Starting from the food habits, the lifestyle, the pollution everything is forcing people to lose their health.  Illness can be as little as normal head-ache or as large as diseases for which there is no treatment found till now.
The routine illnesses observed in today’s life include: headache, obesity, hypertension, diabetes, pains (joints, back, neck), viral diseases etc.  Though it is a fact that some of the diseases are hereditary in nature, majority of the diseases can be even prevented by taking pre-cautions in the areas of food habits, life style, cleaner environment etc.

For example, for 2013 the theme was ‘High Blood Pressure’ which is apt due to the fact that high blood pressure increases the risk of heart attacks, strokes and kidney failure. However, hypertension is treatable and preventable. For 2014 the theme is ‘vector born diseases’.  The theme is apt in view of the fact that 40% of the world’s population is at risk from dengue & an estimated 1.3 million new cases of leishmaniasis (disease caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Leishmania and transmitted by the bite of certain species of the sand fly) occur annually

One needs to be healthy to achieve something in his life.  In majority of the cases, health can be maintained by our own efforts.

There are a number of things you can do to prevent vector born dieseases like:-
  • Wear protective clothing after dusk; long sleeves and long pants in light colours are best. Mosquitoes are attracted to darker colours.
  • Spray your clothing and mosquito nets with an insect repellent containing permethrin, but be careful not to let the clothing touch your eyes and mouth.
  • Use insect repellents. These should be applied to exposed areas of skin but be careful to wash your hands after application and do not touch your eyes and mouth.
  • Always try to stay in accommodation that has insect screens and mosquito netting over the beds. Mosquito coils can be burned and offer some protection for approximately 6 hours.
  • Indoors, use plug-in mosquito zappers.
  • Sleep in air conditioned rooms where possible, as this reduces the risk of mosquito activity.

Therefore Invest in health, build a safer future
