Nursing mothers and weight loss

Nursing mother and weight loss - World Breastfeeding Week 1 - 7 August

A common concern for most of the new mother after delivery is to lose the weight gained during pregnancy….

A good rule of thumb is to take in 200-500 calories in excess of what you needed to maintain your weight before you were pregnant while you are nursing.

Breastfeeding doesn't make you gain weight - in fact, you use up calories when you nurse, and helps you get rid of extra weight more quickly while you are nursing. You might not realize that you already began your weight-loss efforts the moment you put your baby to your breast.

Breastfeeding burns around 300 calories per day, so it can help you begin to lose some of your excess baby weight. What's more, breastfeeding can help stimulate contractions in your uterus that help your belly shrink back to its regular size after pregnancy to help you regain your old shape, too.

Your body stores up fat during your pregnancy to provide the extra calories needed for milk production. It is easier to lose lower body fat (hips, buns, and thighs) when you are breastfeeding compared to the mom who is formula feeding. .

Begin your weight loss program slowly when you are breastfeeding. Increase your activity level.

Nutritional status and TV watching

Do you feed your kids infront TV or watching or playing games on mobiles, tab, Ipads etc

Why is it that this habits are not good have you given this a thought?

The child is not eating mindfully, is unaware of the texture, the taste and the portion size so it is possible for the mother to overfeed the child which can in long run result in obesity.

The better option would be either tell some story regards the healthy food  rather than making them watch TV or use gadgets.

Healthy monsoon snacks

Healthy Monsoon🌦 Snacks

Further adding on to my previous post on healthy snacking options for monsoons here are a few more

Baked aloo tikki, corn tikki, crepes (besan chillas), steamed momos, soups, a mixed-sprouts chaat, grilled snacks, mix veg pattice or aloo chaat. It's easier to make, delicious, and definitely more nutritious than the fried pakoras.

Grilled sandwich perfectly substitutes a bread pakoda by offering a nice mix of boiled vegetables, a bit of cheese or panir for taste, and crunchy slices of bread, Similarly bread with hot besan or egg omelette is also a high protein healthy snack option in a rainy weather.

Rains are beautiful, so enjoy yourself, but don't make exceptions to your diet you might regret later.

Peanuts health benefits

Go nuts over this Peanuts

Peanuts are not actually nuts, as the name would imply. Peanuts are a member of the legume family, and are closely related to peas, beans, lentils and chickpeas.

Also known as Groundnut, moongphali, moongfali, sing, singdana

Loaded with protein, fiber, healthy fats (monounsaturated fats), vitamins (vitamin E, folate niacin), minerals( manganese) and phytonutrients, peanuts are nutritious.

Peanuts are associated with reduced risks for chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes and hypertension due to the presence of RESVERATROL, a phenolic ant-oxidant usually found in grapes.

Peanuts may also help you control your weight if you consume them in moderation.

Peanuts do not contain cholesterol.

Peanuts have a very low glycaemic index.

It is recommended that peanuts should undergo some processing like boiling, roasting prior to consumption. The largest danger of the consumption of raw peanuts is the possible presence of aflatoxin, a poison produced by a fungus that may be present on raw peanuts. They are not poisonous, and it is unlikely you'll get a huge amount of toxins from eating a handful. However at times it can lead to problems such as diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea

This Monsoon enjoy a handful of boiled or roasted Peanuts.

Is corn fattening

One of most common myth and fear people have is – corn is fattening and sugary.

Truth: An cob of corn has about the same number of calories as an apple and less than one-fourth the sugar. In other words, it can be one of the healthier foods!

Just remember: while sweet corn is healthy, some of the fried preparation made out of it or toppings people like to put on it aren’t, but still at times an cob of corn slathered in butter and doused in salt is still a healthy option.

For benefits do check out yesterday's post.

Corn on Cobb benefits

Health benefits of Corn
Monsoons are incomplete without a dose of lemon rubbed butta.

With bhuttawalas putting up makeshift stalls at almost every corner in the neighbourhood during the rains, isn’t it difficult to pass by them and not be captivated by the delectable aroma of roasted corn. The way a vendor dips half a lemon in chilli-salt powder and then assaults the corn cob with it sets you salivating in anticipation.Apart from the charcoal roasted variety, there are many who like their bhuttas boiled. This delicious snack has great health benefits.

1. Corn is rich in fiber which aids in digestion. One cup of cooked yellow corn provides 3.6 g of dietary fiber that helps to control your hunger and keeps your digestive system functioning smoothly

2. It is a good source of vit c, niacin n folic acid, which helps prevent heart disease.

3. It contains thiamin that helps maintain memory
and other valuable B-complex group of vitamins such as pantothenic acid, riboflavin, and pyridoxine.

4. It lowers cholesterol and prevents the risk of colon cancer.

5. It is loaded with lutein, zeaxanthin and ß-carotenes (esp the yellow ones), these phytochemicals promote healthy vision.

Enjoy rains with healthy monsoon snacks

Enjoy rains with healthy Monsoon snacks

Monsoon means – Rain, Chai and Pakodas ! Isn’t it especially after getting wet.

Who doesn’t love monsoons? The smell of wet earth, watching the raindrops, getting wet and finally unwinding with a steaming cup of chai or kaapi along with a nice hot snack. While it won’t hurt to occasionally give into your temptations of those crisp onion or chilies bajjis , samosas but yes moderation is a must.

While you are tempted to eat some hot snacks during the rains, why not try some naturally healthy snacks, so for all those who are looking for healthy snack options that you can munch on those rainy days, here are a few:

Corn on the cob: Or bhutta/ makkai. Its fun standing in the rain and watching the corn being grilled over red hot coals! Have it with just salt, red chilli and lime juice.

Peanuts - boiled /roasted . boiled salted peanuts are perfect protein rich snacks for a rainy afternoon.

So give this regular pakoras, smaosas, kachori a twist and try healthy snacks like makai, peanuts.

Organic leafy vegetables...how to know

Organic or no (leafy veges)

How to know if the greens we buy are pesticide free or organic

If you see a few holes in the leaves of the greens you are buying, pick up the bunch; it means it is not heavily ‘pesticided’ .

And one very important tip to follow with greens is wash them well and after washing give a final rinse of salt water for five to seven minutes. This helps remove germs and residue.

Note :- This is as per what I have read and come across.

#shilpsnutrilife #organicvegetables

Organic fruits and veggies... How to know

Organic or No (fruits and veges)

How to know if the fruits and veges we buy are pesticide free or organic

Many a times my clients ask me how to know if the foods we buy are pesticide free or organic.

Although this may be a difficult task in itself however here are a few things to look

Appearance If it is oddly unusually shaped uneven like no two items are identical eg no two leaves of the same mango tree will ever look 100% alike. Similarly, each apple, mango or even grain will always look different from another. Their colour, shape, structure will never be uniform. There will, for instance, be different shades of color instead of the uniformily coloured.

Fruits, vegetables and grains won't be huge in size. There are, of course, special cases in which people do grow large-sized fruits and vegetables organically as well, but they are not the norm and are difficult to find.

How to know if Dals, grains are organic

Organic or No
How to know if the grains, dals we buy are pesticide free or organic

Although a difficult task but this can be checked out –

Insect or worms in your grains are a good thing in a way Keedas (worms) too know that non-organic food is just not edible.Naturally grown sabut daals (like moong sabut, or urad sabut), atta, maida, brown rice, white rice and other grains will get keedas after two-three months and especially in the rains. All you need to do is clean the grain or sun them out like our grandmothers would and still live on with it for quite a few years.

Also their colour, shape, structure will never be uniform. There will, for instance, be different shades of yellow in your moong dal instead of the uniformly bleached yellow of the regular packaged dal.

Keedas don't contaminate your food, pesticides do.

Note :- This is as per what I have read and come across.

Shop shop shop till you drop but don't hog

SALE  SALE SALE!!!!
Shop till you drop but don't Hog

Make sure you eat a good healthy meal before you hit the MALL for shopping. Will save you some expensive calorie investment that you might repent later.

Eat before you go, tuck an apple, dried fruit or high fiber snack bar or roasted channa into your purse or backpack before you leave. You know that shopping always takes longer than you think, so be prepared! Take a water bottle too. If you can forego the food court, even for a drink, you'll be less tempted to buy food.

If incase you have to eat anything while shopping go in for sweetcorns boiled without butter or plain salted popcorns.

Think ahead to what you'll want to eat  when you get home. Prepare some lentils or sprouts which can be had with rice or bread or prepare theplas or get things ready for khicdi in cooker, so you'll have a ready to eat healthy meal when you get home. Or put some fish in the fridge to defrost so it will be ready to grill.

What is more dangerous obesity beginning in childhood or adulthood

Is their a difference in obesity beginning in childhood and adulthood.

Nowadays with multiple foods easily available, children and also adults hardly like to eat home food. The dietary habits have shifted from eating fruits, vegetables, whole grain preparation, milk and products to caloric dense (either loaded with fat or sugar) highly processed foods and drinks which just have calories and very less nutrition in proportion to the same.

The fat cell theory is one of the mechanisms that explain obesity in children due to overfeeding in early years of life. To know more visit

Is childhood obesity about weight or future health problems

#NationalChildhoodObesityWeek
#Childhoodobesityconsequences

Is childhood obesity about weight or future health problems

It's about the present and future health problems that come with extra weight. Extra weight puts kids at higher risk for heartdisease, stroke and type 2 diabetes which up until recently was considered an "adult" illness.

Obesity among children and adolescents is emerging as a serious health burden. It’s a time bomb waiting to explode once these children become adults, making obesity one of the most serious public health challenges of the 21st century.

Childhood obesity is associated with a number of health problems such as
-Hypertension,
-Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus,
-Hypercholesterolemia
-Impaired glucose tolerance that were once confined to adults are now being diagnosed to children.
-Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, a syndrome of variable combinations of menstrual irregularity, acne with obesity and insulin resistance.
-Gallstones,
-Dyslipidemia,
-Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome,
-Early puberty or menarche,
-Eating disorders, skin infections, orthopedic disorders, asthma and other respiratory disorders.

To ensure that kids grow up fit and slim, parents need to be committed to building their health. We can’t collude with our children when it comes to choosing between getting through the daily pile of homework that brings them close to scoring 99 per cent in their finals instead of spending an hour playing badminton in the park outside with them.

Are you fostering childhood obesity

Are you fostering childhood obesity......
The attitude that a kid should get anything he or she wants to eat is a mistake by parents and a huge contributor to rising obesity rates. It is only increasing the chances of their child becoming obese.

Let’s take this into consideration the next time you…

1 Offer your child a second, third, or fourth slice of cake.

2 Allow them to play video or mobile games for hours or watch TV for hours.

3 Demand your child to study all weekend long, without any physical exercise.

4.Encourage eating out atleast once a week as you can't do without it?

5.Weekend outings for you mean visit to mall or to park or playground....

6.Do you carry some junk like waffers, vada, samosa home while returning from work...

7. Is your way of rewarding your kid involve food always like cakes, chocolate etc

8.What else are we doing wrong? What else can we do to ensure our child’s health?

Together, let’s…

How kids become obese

#Nationalchildhoodobesityweek
How do kids become obese or overweight?

Obesity is caused by complex interactions between genes, environment and behavior habits.

Many studies have shown that there is not a big difference in the amount of food eaten and physical activity between obese and non-obese kids. But probably small differences in eating and activity over time really add up and lead to weight gain.

To know how eating pattern, physical inactivity,  obese parents, genetics help in determining childhood obesity visit the link  http://shilpsnutrilife.com/?p=5780

Is being overweight or obese contagious? Are your friends making you fat?

Is being overweight or obese contagious? Are your friends making you fat?

Overweight and obesity can be considered “socially contagious” because the experts believe it’s a case of birds of a feather…. feel better together (even when they’re overweight or obese).

Right from childhood to golden years of our life, our friends define who we are and we choose who are friends are, and thus, ultimately we define ourselves.

Chances are you will eat & drink what your friends eat & drink! If your friends eat healthy, you will make better food choices.

If your nutrition habits are contagious, is exercise as well? Absolutely! If your friends are active, then some of those exercise vibes will enter into you too.

If everyone around you is unhealthy, & overweight, then it may be tougher, but not impossible. The best thing you can do is tell everyone that your goal is to get healthy and fit. True friends will want you to be healthy and happy and will support your health goals.

Be the best influence you can be, if you eat healthily and exercise, you will inspire others to do the same! Be their inspiration!

Rainny season and vegetable care

In rainny season wash all vegetables and fruits thoroughly

In rainny season wash all vegetables and fruits thoroughly, esp green leafy vegetables, cauliflower, broccoli, brinjal, roots and tubers which harbour larvae, worms and dust.

Clean them under running water. Steaming them is the best way to get rid of germs. Soaking the greens in salt water for about 10minutes can help remove insects.

Research has shown that using just plain old water can remove 98% of the bacteria when it is used to rinse and soak produce.

If you decide to use vinegar, research has shown that a 3 part water to 1 part vinegar is most effective. A soak of five to10 minutes should be sufficient. Try to get the water temperature as close to that of the fruit or vegetable that you wish to clean. When you have a variety of fruits and vegetables, it might be best to wash these separately.

International Yoga Day

The World Yoga Day, also known as the International Yoga Day, falls on June 21. The theme of this year is  "Yoga for Peace."

The main aim to celebrate this day is to create an awareness worldwide on the importance of staying fit and healthy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014 had suggested that June 21 be celebrated as the international Yoga Day globally every year. The word Yoga has been originated from Sanskrit word Yuja, which means ‘to join or unite’

The first International Yoga Day at Rajpath, had created two Guinness Book of World records. First with the participation of 35,985 people and second. as many as 84 nations participating in the event.

Yoga originated in ancient India around 5,000 years back. Yoga is an amalgam of physical, mental and spiritual practice which helps enhance one's physical as well as mental health along with the self-healing ability.

Yoga also aids in combating stress causing changes in the genes, a study carried out by the researchers from Psychology at Coventry University in the United Kingdom, with Ivana Buric as the lead researcher, pointed out.

Yoga is the journey of the self, through the self, to the self.

Don't take good health for granted

Don't take good health for granted

No one wants to be sick. But tell me very frankly when do we start to take notice and some action about our health, only after we fall sick or are in the process of losing our health. During this time, we make all sorts of promises and resolutions. But once we get it back, we often return to our old ways. Isn't this true??

Good health is one of those things that is usually taken for granted. Chronic, degenerative conditions usually takes years, even decades, to develop, nothing develops overnight.

For example, heart attack or a tumor in your body, do you think it developed overnight? No way. It took a long time to get to a size where it becomes visible. All your hardwork of abusing your body in the form of unhealthy lifestyle, stress, junk eating, toxic buildup, weakened immune system which had probably been around for years too showed it's effect. Do realize that, once a disease takes root, the decline usually starts gaining momentum.

To know how to preserve good health do get in touch with us at shilpsnutrilife@gmail.com or visit website www.shilpsnutrilife.com

Fresh dates

Fresh dates health benefits

Dates are a type of sweet fruit that grows on palm trees. Dates are a good source of energy. Around 100gm of fresh dates gives 133kcal.

Up to 80 percent of the date flesh is sugar that the body can easily access for energy. Fresh dates have sugar like fructose and dextrose that when eaten replenishes energy and revitalizes the body instantly; thus, for these qualities, dates are being used to breakfast during Ramadan months.

Fresh dates are a particularly good source of calcium, which helps promote strong teeth and bones.

Dates are rich in dietary fiber. Most of the fiber is of the insoluble type, promoting smooth functioning of intestinal tract. It also prevents dietary LDL cholesterol absorption in the gut.

They contain many health benefiting flavonoid polyphenolic antioxidants known as tannins. Tannins are known to have anti-infective, anti-inflammatory, and anti-hemorrhagic (prevent easy bleeding tendencies) properties.

Dates  are low in  fat, 100 g of dates, has only a fraction of a gram is fats.

Muslims generally break their fast by eating dates. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is reported to have said: “Break your fast by eating dates as it is purifying.”

So go ahead have a few dates everyday whether dried or fresh as u wish just enjoy the benefits............

World blood donor day 14th June 2018

World blood donor day 14th June 2018

A blood donor must be deemed healthy before donating blood.

There are many benefits to donating blood like anti cancer,  improved iron stores, the people who benefit most from blood donations are regular donors.

University of California researchers estimate that your body burns about 650 calories with every pint donated, as the body has to work to replenish itself.

You can only donate once every two months, because of the wear and tear your blood-producing systems undergo.

Donate blood,  save a life and improve your health too.

Sit less move more

SIT LESS MOVE MORE
Sitting is the new smoking.

Gavin Bradley, director of Active Working, an international group
Gives following suggestions -

Hold standing meetings,Walking meetings.
Walk over to a colleague’s desk instead of sending an e-mail.
Use the stairs instead of the elevator.
Take your calls standing.
Taking a lunch break.
Walk around.

Isn't this Simple stuff.

No matter how much you exercise, sitting for excessively long periods of time is a risk factor for early death, sitting too long can kill you, even if you exercise.

Have you started moving!!!

Sitting for long hours can affect you

Can sitting for long hours put you in trouble?

You may want to stand up while you read this.

Experts now say you should start standing up at work for at least two hours a day -- and work your way toward four.

Today, the average office worker sits for about 10 hours - office meeting, sending emails, eating meals,  mobile, computer etc.

Medical researchers have long warned that prolonged sitting is dangerous, associated with a

-significantly higher risk of heart disease
- diabetes
- obesity
- cancer
- depression
- muscle and joint problems especially muscles in your lower body are turned off.
- Metabolism slows down 90 percent after 30 minutes of sitting.
- Enzymes that help break down fat drop by 90%
- Good cholesterol drops by 20%

Just getting up for five minutes is going to get things going again.

So SIT LESS MOVE MORE

Connect with Nature

CONNECTING WITH NATURE

Go on a leg powered journey
The simplest way to get back into the way of life of our ancestors is to travel in a more traditional way. We didn’t evolve driving on a motorway or riding a train.

Slowing down, and walking to the top of a mountain, canoeing across a lake, riding a horse or being taken on a journey through wild country by a husky dog sled are all great ways to reconnect with nature.

Similarly walking barefoot on the grass or along the beach. Focus on the feeling of your feet connecting with the earth and the sense of feeling grounded that can come along with this.

Do try this. ...also comment below if you have any further ideas.

Three Rs that can save us

THE THREE R’S THAT CAN SAVE US

We’re probably throwing out more food/money than we realize. We all do…but few of us recognise this and fewer still admit to it! In fact each of us throws away on average 120kg of food a year. but what can you and I do about it?? Do I really waste food?

The following  three R’s can save us!!!

REDUCE – food wastage by buying more efficiently. Take a list with you to the grocery store; you’re less likely to buy items that you won’t use. Even better option is to plan your meals for a week which eases out shopping and cooking both.

REUSE- unwanted item where possible instead of disposing them
Donate any unopened non-perishable items that you definitely won’t use. Clean out your fridge/freezer/cupboards on a somewhat regular basis and use  anything that is getting near to the manufacturers “best by” date.

RECYCLE - compost
Use any leftover food, use your creativity. If at times you have brought a vegetable, it already started spoiling so can’t reuse it, you’re down to “recycle”, that’s where composting comes in, possibly some nice soil will magically appear.

Just THINK.EAT.SAVE: Reduce your foodprint!
Save Food, Save Environment and Save Lives………

So now you are aware about the 3R’s!

Beat plastic pollution

World environment day 5th June 2018

With “Beat Plastic Pollution” as the theme for this year’s edition, the world is coming together to combat single-use plastic pollution.

Here are some super easy ways to get started.

Bring your own shopping bag made of cloth

Stop buying bottled water. ...use Stainless Steel or earthen ware bottles

Say no to disposable plastics, Replace disposable items with reusable like made of neem or edible alternatives.

Instead of plastic straw,  use one made from wheat or bamboo.

Look out for packaging when shopping, like buy Ketchup, mustard, oil, vinegar, and other products in glass jars and bottles.

Let's each one of us pledge "If you can’t reuse it, refuse it"

Share your ideas about bringing down the plastic pollution.
