Culinary uses of Sesame seeds (til)

Culinary uses of Sesame seeds (til)

Sesame seeds have delicate nutty flavor. Their flavor indeed becomes more pronounced once they are gently roasted under low flame just for few minutes.
-Use it as the traditional seasoning to enrich the taste of your food.
-Sesame seeds add a great touch to steamed broccoli that has been sprinkled with lemon juice.
-You could make a paste of sesame seeds, add crushed garlic, lime juice and salt and use it as a dip for raw vegetables.

- Grind the seeds fresh shortly before using them.
-Sprinkle whole or  ground seeds over cereals, vegetable dishes, salads or fruit.

- Can be added  to parathas
-Also in Tamil Nadu, 'Milakai Podi', a ground powder made of sesame and dry chili is used to enhance flavor and consumed along with other traditional foods such as idli.
-Dry fried sesame seeds ground to a thin light brown color paste known as tahini. Tahini is one of the main ingredient in famous middle-eastern dip, hummus.

-Dry fried seeds sprinkled over toasts, biscuits, breads, cakes, salads, stir fries etc.

Just a hand full of sesame a day provides enough recommended levels of phenolic anti-oxidants, minerals, vitamins and protein.

Go ahead enjoy sankranti with til ladoo, til gajjaks, til chikki…..just control the portion size and have it in the earlier part of the day!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are you suffering from osteoporosis?

Are you suffering from osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis literally means "porous bone." As we age, our bones naturally lose thickness and strength. Osteoporosis leads to an increased risk of fractures (breaks). Called the "silent crippler," osteoporosis often progresses without symptoms or pain until a fracture occurs.

To check if you are at risk of osteoporosis, answer the following questions. If you answer Yes to more than three, see your GP.

Do you spend more than 10 minutes a day outdoors?

Is your BMI less than 21?
Have either of your parents broken a hip after a minor fall?
Have you had an early menopause?
Have you missed periods for more than six months as a result of over-exercising or dieting?
Do you have a history of thyroid or other hormonal problems?
Did you eat a poor diet low in calcium (lacking in dairy products, green leafy vegetables) as a teenager or even now?
Do you drink lots of soft drinks?
Do you smoke more than ten cigarettes a day?
Do you drink more than 3 alcoholic drinks a day?
Do you play sports or exercise less than twice a week?
Do you have a close relative with osteoporosis?

A Nutritious diet plan along with lifestyle modification can go a long way in preventing osteoporosis.

How to Test a Calcium Supplement's Ability to Dissolve

How to Test a Calcium Supplement's Ability to Dissolve

Hi guys got through a really good stuff…..

How to Test a Calcium Supplement's Ability to Dissolve

Are you taking a calcium supplement to prevent the onset of osteoporosis? Depending on the quality of the pill, it may not be dissolving fully in your stomach. This means that fewer nutrients are making their way to your system. By dropping two of your tablets into vinegar, you can easily test the quality of your calcium supplement. The vinegar mimics the action of your stomach acid on the tablets, and allows you to see just what happens to them after they are ingested.

 Things You'll Need
  • 3/4 cup white vinegar
  • Glass
  • Two calcium supplement pills
  • Spoon

1 Pour the vinegar into the glass and add the calcium supplements.
2 Soak the tablets in the vinegar for 30 minutes, stirring them once every couple minutes.
3 Monitor the supplements' progress. If they are nearly dissolved or broken up into small fragments after 30 minutes, they are likely doing their job. If they are still whole or in several large chunks, you should try a different brand of calcium supplement.

ALL ABOUT CALCIUM SUPPLEMENTS

ALL ABOUT CALCIUM SUPPLEMENTS

Calcium Citrate e.g. Citracal or Solgar:
• Absorption:
Calcium is best absorbed in an acidic environment, hence calcium citrate is the best absorbed supplemental form of calcium. It does not require extra stomach acid for absorption, hence we may take it anytime in a day, even on an empty stomach.

• Calcium content: Calcium Citrate usually provides less elemental cal
cium per pill than Calcium Carbonate, therefore one may need to take a relatively more numbers of pills per day to meet the needs.

• Pill Size: Calcium Citrate is usually small in capsule form.

• If you suffer from acid stomach, it is best to avoid Calcium Citrate.

Calcium Carbonate e.g. Tums or Caltrate, Shell cal
• Absorption: Calcium Carbonate is alkaline based, it requires extra stomach acid for better absorption, hence it is best taken right after meals or with a glass of acidic juice such as orange juice.
• Calcium Content: Calcium Carbonate is the most prevalent calcium supplements in the market . It provides more elemental calcium than Calcium Citrate hence you may not need take as many pills.
• Pill Size: Calcium Carbonate usually comes in a bigger tablet, some people may find it harder to swallow.

Calcium carbonate contains 40 percent elemental calcium, while calcium citrate contains 21 percent elemental calcium. So 1,000mg of calcium carbonate supplies 400mg of elemental calcium, while 1,000mg of calcium citrate contains 210mg.

Calcium Absorption Dosage

 Calcium Absorption Dosage

Calcium is best absorbed when taken in smaller amounts more frequently. For example, your body absorbs more calcium if you take one 250 milligram tablet twice a day rather than one 500 milligram tablet once a day. If a higher dose calcium tablet is a better buy, break it in half.

World Osteoporosis Day -20th Oct 2012

World Osteoporosis Day - 20th Oct 2012
World Osteoporosis Day 2012 Theme is
"Stop at One: Make Your First Break Your Last"

Osteoporosis is a ‘silent disease’, the literal meaning of the word is "porous bone", the disease causes a reduction in the density and quality of the bones, bones become fragile, brittle and hence more prone to fractures, usually in the wrist, spine and hips.

•Fractures are warning signs: One fracture leads to another
•A person who has suffered an osteoporotic fracture is twice as likely to suffer a fracture in the future if no diagnosis and treatment for osteoporosis has been provided.
•Approximately half of all people who have had one osteoporotic fracture will have another, with the risk of new fractures increasing exponentially after each fracture.
•One in four women who have a new vertebral fracture will fracture again within one year.
•
If you are 50 years of age or older and have had a fracture you should ask your doctor for a clinical assessment that will include a bone mineral density test.
How can you maintain your bone health?

•Calcium intake– Calcium is a mineral needed by the body for healthy bones, teeth, and proper function of the heart, muscles, and nerves. The body cannot produce calcium; therefore, it must be absorbed through food. Dairy products, green leafy vegetables, nuts & calcium fortified foods like orange juice, cereal, bread, and soya are rich sources of calcium. Calcium supplements should be taken on the advice of a doctor. Good forms of calcium supplements are calcium carbonate and calcium citrate. But one should be careful not to get more than 2,000 mg of calcium a day.

•Vitamin D supplementation- Vitamin D helps in the absorption of calcium. Foods which are rich in vitamin D are eggs, fatty fish like salmon, cereal and milk fortified with vitamin D. Sunlight is also a good source of vitamin D.
•Exercises– Exercise makes bones and muscles stronger and helps prevent bone loss. Weight-bearing exercises, done at least three to four times a week, are best for preventing Osteoporosis. Walking, jogging, playing tennis and dancing are all good weight-bearing exercises. In addition, strength and balance exercises may help you avoid falls, decreasing your chance of breaking a bone. Consult an expert whenever engaging in advanced, vigorous and form-heavy exercises.
•An optimal diet rich in calcium and protein is important to ensure proper bone formation and density.

•Lifestyle changes, including quitting smoking and curtailing excessive alcohol intake will also benefit
.

Benefits of Dates Fruit (Khajoor)

Benefits of Dates Fruit (Khajoor)

Dates are a type of sweet fruit that grows on palm trees. They have been cultivated since approximately 6000 B.C. They grow on the tree for six or seven months before they are ripe enough to eat. There are three main types of dates, which are classified based on the moisture of the flesh: dry, semi-dry and soft. The health benefits of dates are derived from the nutrients they provide.

 Fresh vs. Dried Dates

Carbohydrates

Dates are a good source of energy. Up to 80 percent of the date flesh is sugar that the body can easily access for energy. Fresh dates have a somewhat lower percentage of sugar because they contain more moisture than dried dates, and the sugar in dried dates is more concentrated, but fresh dates are still a good source of carbohydrates. Fresh date is made of soft, easily digestible flesh with simple sugars like fructose and dextrose that when eaten replenishes energy and revitalizes the body instantly; thus, for these qualities, dates are being used to breakfast during Ramadan months.

Minerals

Dates are a particularly good source of calcium, which helps promote strong teeth and bones. Dried Dates are an excellent source of iron, being a component of hemoglobin inside the red blood cells, determines the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood.

In addition, They are good in potassium. Potassium is an important component of cell and body fluids that help controlling heart rate and blood pressure; thus offers protection against stroke and coronary heart diseases.

 Fiber

The fruit is rich in dietary fiber. Most of the fiber is of the insoluble type, meaning that its major health-promoting effect is to add bulk to stool and help food move through the intestinal tract. The fiber content helps to protect the colon mucous membrane by decreasing exposure time and as well as binding to cancer causing chemicals in the colon. It prevents dietary LDL cholesterol absorption in the gut.

They contain many health benefitting flavonoid polyphenolic antioxidants known as tannins. Tannins are known to have anti-infective, anti-inflammatory, and anti-hemorrhagic (prevent easy bleeding tendencies) properties.

Low Fat

Another health benefit of dates is that they are low fat. In 100 g of dates, only a fraction of a gram is saturated fats.

Muslims generally break their fast by eating dates. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is reported to have said: “Break your fast by eating dates as it is purifying.”

So go ahead have a few dates everyday whether dried or fresh as u wish just enjoy the benefits.............

SESAME SEEDS (TIL)

SESAME SEEDS (TIL)

Sometimes, small seeds can sprout large health benefits. This can certainly be said about til (sesame seeds). In addition to their popular use in making crunchy til ladoos, gajjaks, as dips or as a garnish for breads and desserts, these seeds are abundant in lesser known health promoting properties.

Lets have a look at its health benefits.

Did you know that half a cup of sesame seeds contains three times more calcium than half a cup of whole milk? Just 100 gm of white sesame seeds provides approximately 1,000 mg of calcium.

In addition to being an excellent dietary source of calcium, sesame seeds are also a good source of manganese, copper, magnesium, zinc, iron, phosphorus, vitamin B1 (thiamin), zinc, vitamin E, healthy protein, and fiber.

Sesame seeds contain methionine and tryptophan — two important amino acids that most other vegetarian foods such as peas, groundnuts, rajhma, chowli and soya bean are deficient in. These fine quality amino acids are essential for growth, especially in children.

Sesame seeds are rich in EFA’s(essential fatty acids) that are of help to prevent dry skin, mood swings, PMS, pain and inflammation.

Black and red sesame seeds are particularly rich in iron, folic acid and are effective in treating anaemia. 100 g of sesame contains 97 mcg of folic acid, about 25% of recommended daily intake. Folic acid is essential for DNA synthesis. When given in expectant mothers during peri-conception period, it may prevent neural tube defects in the baby.

In addition to these important nutrients, sesame seeds contain two unique substances: sesamin and sesamolin. Both of these substances belong to a group of special beneficial fibers called lignans, and have been shown to have a cholesterol-lowering effect in humans, and to prevent high blood pressure and increase vitamin E supplies in animals. Sesamin has also been found to protect the liver from oxidative damage.
