Fats and Brain

Your brain is the fattest organ in the body and may consists of at least 60% fat (yep, you technically are a “fathead”).  But on a serious note, the reason I am pointing this out is because so many people don’t get enough healthy fats in their diet to support optimal brain functioning.

DHA (short for docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (short for eicosapentaenoic acid) are omega 3 fatty acids that promote thinking and memory.

Eat Dinner at least two hours before bedtime

Eat Dinner at least two hours before bedtime

It is generally advised to stop eating two hours before bedtime as our body’s metabolism dips and it is preparing for sleep(rest).

Furthermore, lying down to go to sleep after eating a late dinner or midnight snack makes it impossible for gravity to hold food and liquids in place so stomach acids can do their job.

Also lack of activity after dinner makes it difficult for the body to digest food, some researchers believe going to bed with a full stomach causes the food to turn to fat.

Regardless of which theory is correct, the bottom line is that eating before bed interferes with getting a good night's sleep.
So, however  healthy dinner you eat it does not serve its purpose.

Valentine's day special - Love and health

Love And Health

Research Examines Love’s Impact On Health.

On Valentine’s Day you need to consider this: There’s actually some real science behind those feelings of romance and affection.

Love actually can make us healthier, so much so that if you could bottle it, you would have an incredible wonder drug.

Scientists are beginning to discover that apart from food, exercise, stress, lifestyle, there is one facet of life that ranks above all in determining wellness and longevity. This facet is the level of love and connectedness that we feel.

If a growing body of research is to be believed, love can
-lengthen your life
-ward off stress
-boost your immune system
-lower your blood pressure
-protect you from colds and flu
-blunt your response to pain
-hasten wound healing and
-lower your risk of dementia in old age.

A study of nearly 1,400 people with heart disease found that those with a spouse or confidant died at approximately one-third the rate of those who had no one to confide in. Past research on love and health also presented by ABC News reported on a study showing that being with a spouse or partner is linked with a drop in blood pressure.

Well-respected author and medical doctor, Dean Ornish, makes a powerful claim for the value of love and intimacy: “I am not aware of any other factor in medicine – not diet, not smoking, not exercise, not stress, not genetics, not drugs, not surgery – that has a greater impact on our quality of life, incidence of illness, and premature death from all causes. Love and intimacy are at the root of what makes us sick and what makes us well, what causes sadness and what brings happiness, what makes us suffer, and what leads to healing.”

In summary, if you are interested in wellness and longevity, it appears fruitful to foster meaningful relationships that provide a sense of love and connectedness. As Dr. Ornish states succinctly, “Know that this really matters to your health.”

So there you have it, love is good for almost everything. The only exception: it doesn’t help you lose weight.

Do Good To All Before Dying
Spread Smiles Instead Of Crying
Love Everyone Well In Time
To Make Every Moment Valentine

Wishing you all a very happy Valentine day…Cheers

The Importance of Folic Acid during Pregnancy

The Importance of Folic Acid during Pregnancy

All nutrients are essential in preparing for pregnancy, but folate or folic acid merits special consideration.

Soon after conception, folate helps develop the baby’s neural tube, which becomes the spinal cord and brain. Women who consume enough folate, particularly in the weeks prior to conception and during the first six weeks of pregnancy, may reduce their babies’ risks of neural tube defects.

Eat a variety of foods rich in folate, such as citrus fruits and juices, dark-green leafy vegetables, beans and nuts. And women of childbearing age should consume 400 micrograms of folic acid (600 micrograms if pregnant) from fortified foods in grains, such as breads, cereals or pastas, vitamin supplements or both, in addition to the folate found naturally in other foods.

Move more to control weight gain during pregnancy

#PregnancyAwarenessWeek
Move More to Control Weight Gain During Pregnancy

If a woman gains too much weight during pregnancy, it increases her risk for complications such as preeclampsia (high blood pressure and excess protein in the urine) and for obesity after delivery, and also ups the baby’s risk for childhood obesity.

Along with helping control weight, regular physical activity can help reduce back pain, boost energy levels and reduce insomnia.
