Myth :- Draining out excess water (kanjee) from cooked rice reduces calories.

Many a times people tell me they cook rice by draining method i.e cook rice in excess water and then strain the water so that all the starch - calories gets washed away. Do you too really think so????

If and only if it was so easy we could just wash high calorie foods and enjoy life it isn't it!!!!

Boiling rice in excess water and discarding the gruel (kanjee) will only result in loss of some amount of minerals and vitamins without effecting its calorie content .It may remove as much as 40% of the thiamine and nicotinic acid (B complex vitamins).

Cook in just sufficient amount of water so that all the water is absorbed and no kanjee is discarded. Pressure cooking is the best method to cook rice and will help in preserving maximum nutrients.
